Comment by Eric Petersen on June 30, 2011 at 3:22pm I experience the same thing after a 1/2 IM as well as after the IM this past weekend here in CdA. I make it a habit to cool / ice my legs after to help the recovery process. It always makes me shiver like a leaf! It will even hit me if I do not do it...it just takes longer to do so.
I suspect it has to do with the body being under sustained stress that when ended, you body goes into "protection mode' sending a majority of the blood to the core / vital organs etc. There is also inflammation to consider - the onset of inflammation after sustained / prolonged exercise can spike - this reducing the blood flow.

Comment by Clinton Erickson on June 30, 2011 at 1:31pm perhaps someone in this group knows the answer to this question.
After IMCDA I am feeling well and warm. I went into the massage tent and walked out 15 min later still feeling well and warm. Upon exiting the tent it felt as if I jumped into an ice cold lake. Immediately starting shivering uncontrollably. It was debilitating. I expected to get cold... eventually, but this came on instantly and within 3 feet after leaving the massage tent.
Lucky for me my friend/s where nearby still and one gave me their jacket and I had that shiny blanket still. But it took a hot shower and tub soak to truly warm up, which I did about 90 min after I finished IM.
Can anyone here explain what was likely happening? It must be more then a reaction to the ambient temp, right? Maybe something chemical or more physiological?
-cheers
